WORLDWIDE STATISTICS ON CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE AND RAPE
* 1 in 3 women and 1 in 6 men will be sexually abused before the age of 18 (Australian Institute of Criminology, most current )
* Of recorded sexual assault crimes the highest rate of sexual assault was recorded for girls 10-14 years of age, (Australian Institute of Criminology, 2006)
* Research shows a staggering 45% of women aged 18-41 were sexually abused as children by family members or someone they knew (86%) or strangers (14%) (Watson, B., Griffith University, Herald Sun, 9th October, 2007)
* Victims of child sexual abuse had a suicide rate that was 10.7 to 13.0 times the national Australian Rates. A recent study of child sexual abuse victims found 32% had attempted suicide and 43% had thought about suicide. (Plunkett, Shrimpton & Parkinson, 2001)
* More than 67,000 cases of rape and sexual assaults against children were reported in 2000 in South Africa, Child welfare groups believe that the number of unreported incidents could be up to 10 times that number. ( BBC NEWS March 2015 )
* Most sexual abuse of children occurs in a residence, typically that of the victim or perpetrator. 84% of sexual victimization of children under age 12 occurs in a residence. Even older children are most likely to be assaulted in a residence. 71% of sexual assaults on children age 12-17 occur in a residence (Snyder, 2000).
* 93% of the rape victims age 18 and under knew the rapist. Of these rapists, 34.2% were family members and 58.7% were acquaintances ( U.S. Suicide.org )
* A recent Australian study funded by a Criminology Research Council Grant, conservatively estimates the cost to society of child sexual assault to be in excess of $200,000 per child. (Briggs,) At a national level, the ABCI estimates 40,000 Australian children will be sexually abused each year. That’s $7.2 Billion dollars worth of damage.
